The Battle

History & Significance

Prince Louis of France accepted the rebel barons' invitation and landed at Thanet with a large French army. His arrival made the First Barons' War a genuine invasion — London opened its gates, most of the Midlands submitted. At John's death in October 1216 Louis controlled roughly two-thirds of England. Only the regency of William Marshal and the young Henry III's cause reversed the tide.
