The Battle

History & Significance

The MacDougall lords of Lorn seized Duart Castle on the east coast of Mull in the 1270s-1280s and used it as the principal stronghold for their control of the Mull passage. Duart commanded the Sound of Mull and was the strategic key to control of traffic between the inner and outer Hebrides. MacDougall control of Duart confirmed their dominance over the central Hebridean sea-lanes.
