History & Significance

At the outbreak of the first Jacobite rising in 1689, the MacDonalds of Glengarry immediately declared for King James. They secured Invergarry Castle and the surrounding area, expelled government sympathisers, and provided a Jacobite stronghold in the central Highlands. Dundee used Invergarry as part of his base of operations before Killiecrankie.
