History & Significance

Earls of Hereford and Norfolk with their allies mustered forces in Norfolk in 1297 in defiance of Edward I's demand for overseas service without pay. The muster was a show of force intended to pressure Edward before his Flanders campaign. It forced Edward to issue Confirmatio Cartarum and represented the most serious domestic military challenge of his reign from his own nobility.
