The MacDonalds under John of Islay moved into Ardnamurchan in 1336, taking over the territory from the declining MacIain lords and incorporating it into the expanding MacDonald sphere. Ardnamurchan with its commanding castle at Mingary controlled the Ardnamurchan Point passage and was a key strategic position for controlling movement between the Inner and Outer Hebrides.
