History & Significance

In the year before the great Norwegian expedition to the Western Isles, Alexander III conducted a military campaign in Ross to secure the northern mainland. The campaign ensured that when Haakon IV arrived with his fleet, Alexander would not face simultaneous threats from the north and the west. The pacification of Ross in 1262 was part of the systematic preparation for the confrontation with Norway that culminated at Largs in 1263.
