History & Significance

In the year following Largs and Haakon's death, Alexander III moved quickly to occupy the Western Isles before Norway could mount another expedition. Scottish forces sailed through the Hebrides and received the submission of the island lords. This occupation formed the military basis for the diplomatic settlement that followed: the Treaty of Perth in 1266, by which Norway formally ceded the Hebrides and Isle of Man to Scotland for 4,000 marks and an annual payment.
