History & Significance

One of the most celebrated Jacobite anecdotes. Prince Charles was staying at Moy Hall, residence of Lady Anne Mackintosh ("Colonel Anne") whose husband served in the government army. Lord Loudon led 1,500 men from Inverness on a night march to capture the Prince. A Mackintosh blacksmith named Donald Fraser positioned five men in the darkness ahead of the column. They fired shots and shouted the battle cries of several clans, creating the impression of a large force. Loudon's army panicked and retreated to Inverness. One government soldier was killed — a MacCrimmon piper who had composed a lament predicting his own death. "Cha till mi tuille" (I will return no more).
