The Battle

History & Significance

Tummel Bridge, where the main road crosses the River Tummel between Aberfeldy and Killiecrankie, was a minor strategic point during the 1689 campaign. Jacobite forces controlled this crossing and used it as a link between their operations in Strathtay and the main concentration area around Blair Atholl. Government scouts probing north from the Lowlands encountered Jacobite outposts at this crossing during the weeks of manoeuvring before Killiecrankie. The bridge's control helped Dundee maintain lateral communications across the Highland passes.
