History & Significance

By 1311 Bruce had recovered most of Scotland and turned his attention to systematic raiding into England. The 1311 Northumberland raid was one of the most profitable — large areas were burned and the county paid a substantial sum for a truce. The raids served multiple purposes: extracting supplies and cash, demonstrating English impotence, and pressuring Edward II to negotiate. Northern England paid for the Scottish wars in blood and treasure.
