History & Significance

The Norfolk rising of 1381 was the most sustained provincial revolt of the Peasants Revolt outside Kent and London. Geoffrey Lister, a dyer from Felmingham, led a force that captured Norwich briefly and terrorised gentry throughout the county. The rebels set up a court at North Walsham, demanding the release of imprisoned rebels. Henry Despenser, the warrior Bishop of Norwich, crushed the revolt with decisive speed, defeating Lister\'s forces at North Walsham and executing him. The speed of suppression contrasted with the chaos in London.

Forces Involved

Royal: Bishop Despenser\'s retinue and loyal gentry. Rebels: Geoffrey Lister\'s Norfolk insurgents estimated at several thousand
