History & Significance

Northeast Scotland — Aberdeenshire, Banffshire and the Gordon country — was strongly Jacobite in 1715. The Earl of Mar drew heavily on these areas for men, horses and supplies. Skirmishing occurred throughout the northeast as Jacobite forces established their control against local government sympathisers and small government detachments. The Gordon family were prominent Jacobites in this region.
