History & Significance

The MacKays of Strathnaver successfully resisted Gordon encroachment into their traditional territory in this engagement. The Gordon Earls of Sutherland had been systematically extending their power northward, and the MacKays were one of the few clans capable of stopping them. The battle bought the MacKays another generation of autonomy before Gordon dominance eventually became overwhelming.
