History & Significance

After Llywelyn the Great's death (1240), his son Dafydd ap Llywelyn found himself isolated when Henry III invaded. The Treaty of Aberconwy (1241) stripped Dafydd of most of his father's gains. Dafydd died childless in 1246, leading to the division of Gwynedd among his nephews — until Llywelyn ap Gruffudd emerged supreme at Bryn Derwin (1255). The castle and town of Conwy were the site of the negotiations.
