Rannoch Moor and the remote glens of Perthshire and Argyll remained a refuge for armed Jacobite clansmen long after the main military resistance ended at Cromdale. Government columns penetrated this wilderness with difficulty, burning townships and driving cattle. The Robertson clan (Clan Donnachaidh) of Rannoch were persistent Jacobite adherents who resisted government authority in their remote upland country. Secretary Stair's pressure on clan chiefs to take the oath of loyalty was partly driven by the continued lawlessness in areas like Rannoch, which he used to justify the extreme measures that led to Glencoe.
