History & Significance

Castle Cary in Somerset was one of several southwest castles that changed hands during the early Anarchy. It was held for the imperialist cause and besieged by Stephen. The southwest was a particularly contested region where the proximity of Bristol, the imperialist capital, meant constant military activity. Stephen reduced several of these Somerset castles but could not hold them permanently.
