Through the winter of 1715-16, Mar's great Jacobite army at Perth was slowly dissolving through desertion, lack of pay and declining morale. Foraging operations through Perthshire became increasingly coercive as the army competed with the civilian population for scarce winter supplies. Government sympathisers were targeted but neutral farmers also suffered. The contrast between the disciplined, well-supplied Argyll's army and the deteriorating Jacobite force was stark. By February 1716 when James VIII sailed from Montrose, the army was a shadow of its autumn strength.
