History & Significance

In the week before the raising of the standard at Braemar on 6 September 1715, clan contingents marched to converge on the Deeside gathering point. Government agents attempted to monitor and disrupt these movements. Minor skirmishing occurred as Jacobite advance parties secured roads and passes. The gathering at Braemar was the largest clan muster since Killiecrankie — eventually producing an army of some 12,000 men, the largest Jacobite force ever assembled. Mar's inability to use it effectively made this strength meaningless.
