History & Significance

The Percies and their allies confronted the Nevilles near Stamford Bridge in the East Riding. Both sides mustered large retinues in what amounted to private armies. The confrontation was one of several during the 1453-55 period when the two families effectively waged private war. The government under the incapacitated Henry VI was powerless to stop it.
