The Battle

History & Significance

Three months after his coronation at Scone, Robert Bruce was surprised at dawn by Aymer de Valence. His army was scattered and Bruce became a fugitive for nearly a year, hiding on the western islands. The disaster paradoxically saved the Scottish cause — Edward I died in 1307 while pursuing Bruce, and the incompetence of Edward II allowed Bruce to recover and ultimately triumph.

Casualties & Losses

Many of Bruce's chief supporters captured and executed
