History & Significance

Wark Castle on Tyne was repeatedly taken and retaken during the Scottish Wars. In 1319, with Edward II distracted at Berwick, Scottish forces were able to reduce Wark and other smaller castles on the Northumbrian borders, systematically eliminating the chain of English defensive posts.
