Dumbarton Castle — on its great rock at the junction of the Clyde and Leven — commanded the sea approach to the Highlands and the gateway to the western isles. Its capture by Bruce in 1309 completed Scottish control of all western seaways. Combined with the Argyll campaign that broke the MacDougalls, the capture of Dumbarton gave Bruce mastery of western Scotland for the first time. The castle became a key Scottish royal fortress for centuries.
