History & Significance

After Culloden on 16 April 1746, Cumberland's army marched to Inverness. The town became the base for the Highland pacification over the following months. Government columns radiated out from Inverness into every Highland glen. Cumberland established his headquarters at Culloden House — the home of Forbes of Culloden, the Lord President who had ironically tried harder than anyone to prevent the rising. The Duke of Cumberland stayed in Inverness from April to July 1746, directing the pacification that earned him the epithet 'Butcher.' He returned to London to a hero's reception, with Handel's 'See the Conquering Hero Comes' written in his honour.
