The Battle

History & Significance

King Stephen marched north to confront David I's occupation of northern England. Neither side desired a full battle -- Stephen could not afford to create a permanent enemy in the north while fighting for his crown. The resulting Treaty of Durham confirmed Prince Henry, David's son, as Earl of Huntingdon and Northumberland. David effectively retained his gains through diplomacy, demonstrating his skill as a statesman as well as a military commander.
