The Battle

History & Significance

Following the Battle of the Pass of Brander in 1308, Bruce pursued the defeated MacDougalls to their chief stronghold at Dunstaffnage Castle at the mouth of Loch Etive. The castle was besieged and surrendered; the MacDougall chief fled to England and the castle passed to Bruce's control. The fall of Dunstaffnage completed the subjugation of Argyll and ended the MacDougall threat to Bruce's western flank, allowing him to concentrate operations against remaining English-held castles.
