The Battle

History & Significance

Tickhill Castle in Yorkshire was another of Prince John s strongholds besieged when Richard I returned from captivity. Unlike Nottingham the garrison surrendered promptly on Richard s approach without requiring a prolonged siege. The rapid submission of Tickhill illustrated how John s support crumbled as soon as Richard appeared in person. Both Tickhill and Nottingham sieges are recorded by Roger of Hoveden.
