History & Significance

Rob Roy MacGregor used the confusion of the 1715 Jacobite rising to wage his personal war against the Duke of Montrose, who had ruined him financially. While ostensibly supporting the rising, Rob Roy raided Montrose estates and cattle, refusing to commit his men to pitched battle at Sheriffmuir. His fence-sitting at Sheriffmuir became notorious and was later dramatised.
