The Jacobite advance through Lancaster in 1745 demonstrated the vulnerability of northern England and the initial momentum of the '45 Rebellion. This unopposed passage allowed Prince Charles Edward Stuart's Highland army to march south largely unimpeded, boosting morale and recruitment while exposing the weakness of English defenses in the north. The advance alarmed the British government and population, bringing the Jacobite threat closer to London than at any point since 1715.
Jacobites: c.4,000–5,000; opposition: negligible
