History & Significance

Inversnaid on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond was a point of tension between Jacobite MacGregor territory (Rob Roy's country) and the government-controlled Lowlands beyond the Highland edge. In 1715, government forces attempted to establish a garrison at Inversnaid to control the MacGregor passes into the Trossachs. Rob Roy's MacGregors resisted this encroachment on their territory. The skirmish at Inversnaid reflected the ongoing tension between the MacGregors — a landless clan whose very name was proscribed by law — and the government forces. A small government garrison was subsequently established at Inversnaid Barracks after the rising, specifically to control Rob Roy and his clan.
