The Battle

History & Significance

Edward Bruce invaded Ireland and Robert Bruce simultaneously besieged Carlisle in 1315. The siege lasted eleven days, involving assaults, mining, and use of siege engines. The garrison under Sir Andrew Harclay mounted an effective defence. Bruce's forces were ultimately repulsed, one of his rare failures. Carlisle's survival prevented Scottish consolidation on the English side of the border.
