History & Significance

Following the forfeiture of the Lordship of the Isles, the Earls of Argyll moved quickly to occupy strategic castles in Kintyre. Skipness Castle, a key garrison on the eastern Kintyre coast, was seized from its MacDonald defenders. The Campbells used their role as government enforcers to absorb territories vacated by the fallen Lordship.
