Thomas Randolph, Earl of Moray, commanded the Scottish centre division on 24 June 1314. His schiltron advanced in conjunction with Edward Bruce's left and Douglas's right, maintaining the tight formation that denied English cavalry space to charge effectively. Randolph's division engaged the English centre and pressed the clustered infantry and cavalry toward the waterlogged Carse. His steady advance on the previous day against Clifford's cavalry had already demonstrated the resilience of Scottish spear formations against mounted attack.
