The Battle

History & Significance

Before Lord Lewis Gordon secured northeast Scotland for the Jacobites in late 1745, Aberdeen experienced a period of contested authority. Pro-government sympathisers in the city — including leading merchants, magistrates and members of the Hanoverian-sympathising Aberdeen establishment — attempted to hold the city against Jacobite pressure. A Jacobite force approaching Aberdeen in October 1745 encountered resistance from a small government detachment and armed citizens. The confrontation at the city approaches tested Jacobite resolve before Gordon's decisive operations in the northeast. Aberdeen eventually fell under Jacobite control but the initial resistance demonstrated the city's divided loyalties.
