Before Lord Lewis Gordon secured northeast Scotland for the Jacobites in late 1745, Aberdeen experienced a period of contested authority. Pro-government sympathisers in the city — including leading merchants, magistrates and members of the Hanoverian-sympathising Aberdeen establishment — attempted to hold the city against Jacobite pressure. A Jacobite force approaching Aberdeen in October 1745 encountered resistance from a small government detachment and armed citizens. The confrontation at the city approaches tested Jacobite resolve before Gordon's decisive operations in the northeast.
