The Battle

History & Significance

The recovery of Stirling Castle in 1342 completed the Scottish reconquest of its major fortresses. With Edinburgh (1341), Stirling (1342), and other castles back in Scottish hands, Edward IIIs military position in Scotland effectively collapsed. Balliols claim was increasingly nominal. The recovery of Stirling — won and lost so many times during the Wars of Independence — was a symbolic as well as strategic achievement. Scotland was never again fully occupied by English forces during David IIs reign.
