History & Significance

Robert Curthose, Duke of Normandy, landed at Portsmouth in July 1101 with an invasion force to claim the English throne from his brother Henry I. The landing was largely unopposed as many English barons had pledged support to Robert. Henry mustered his forces at Pevensey believing Robert would land in Sussex, and the Portsmouth landing was a strategic surprise that gave Robert initial momentum.
