History & Significance

The Peasants Revolt of 1381 had a Yorkshire dimension less studied than the dramatic southern events. Beverley experienced serious unrest; Scarborough's poor rose against the established guild merchants; York itself had disorder. Poll-tax collectors were attacked across the East and North Ridings. The Yorkshire risings were suppressed with less violence than in the south, partly because the news of Wat Tyler's death and the young Richard II's promises reached the north before a major confrontation occurred.
