Wallace's forces after Stirling Bridge raided deep into Northumberland. Corbridge, a market town on the Tyne, was burned. The raiders moved as far south as the outskirts of Newcastle, terrorizing the population and stripping the countryside of livestock and grain. The Sack of Hexham priory also occurred in this raid. Northern England was essentially defenseless against these fast-moving Scottish forces.
