Aberdeen fell to the Jacobites at the outset of the 1715 rising. The city was already sympathetic — its Episcopal and Episcopalian population was substantially Jacobite in sentiment, and the University of Aberdeen had strong Jacobite connections. Mar's forces occupied the city and used it as a supply and administrative centre for the northeast. Government sympathisers fled or submitted. Aberdeen provided the Jacobites with customs revenue, supplies and a port for receiving arms and correspondence from the Continent. The city was held until the rising's collapse in February 1716.
