The Battle

History & Significance

Between Bannockburn in 1314 and Myton in 1319, Yorkshire endured four years of repeated Scottish raiding. Communities from Allertonshire to the Vale of York paid ransoms to avoid destruction. Hartlepool was burned; Richmond paid repeated sums; parts of the North Riding were virtually abandoned. The economic devastation deepened the famine impact of 1315-17 and created a catastrophic crisis for Yorkshire.
