The Battle

History & Significance

General Mackay retreating south through the Atholl valley after Killiecrankie was harassed by Jacobite clansmen at the village of Aldclune, between Blair Atholl and Killiecrankie. The narrow pass and wooded valley allowed Jacobite skirmishers to press the demoralised government column. Mackay managed to extract his surviving regulars to Stirling but lost considerable baggage and stragglers in the process. The pursuit skirmishes in the immediate aftermath of Killiecrankie contributed significantly to total government casualties beyond those on the battlefield itself.
