History & Significance

Following the victory at Byland, Robert Bruce conducted one of the most destructive Scottish raids into Yorkshire. The Scots reached as far south as Beverley. Religious houses paid enormous ransoms; Ripon paid 900 marks; Fountains Abbey was threatened. Yorkshire communities had already paid ransoms in 1315, 1316, and 1318. The cumulative impact of Scottish raiding was severe, leaving much of the North Riding depopulated.
