The Battle

History & Significance

Robert of Rhuddlan was the most aggressive Norman commander in north Wales; with only his own household troops he conquered virtually all of Gwynedd and demanded tribute even from Anglesey. He built castles at Rhuddlan and later at Deganwy. His campaigns were so extensive that the Domesday Book records all of north Wales under his control. He was eventually killed by Magnus Bareleg in 1093 when he attacked a Viking fleet single-handed off the Great Orme.
