The Campbells of Argyll, hereditary enemies of the MacDonalds and many of the Jacobite clans, remained firmly for the government of William III in 1689. The tenth Earl of Argyll — whose father had been executed by James VII — had every personal reason to oppose the Jacobite cause. Campbell forces operated throughout Argyll and Lorn, suppressing Jacobite sympathisers and securing the western seaboard for the government. Several minor skirmishes occurred as Jacobite-leaning MacLeans, MacDougalls and other clans resisted.
