History & Significance

The Forth estuary was a crucial strategic boundary in the 1715 rising. Government forces under Argyll controlled the crossings at Stirling, preventing Mar's large army from moving south in force. Jacobite parties crossed by boat at other points, including near Dunfermline, seeking to operate in Fife and the Lothians. These operations were disrupted by government cavalry. Mar's failure to force the Forth line was fatal to the rising.
