The Battle

History & Significance

After landing at Loch Alsh and garrisoning Eilean Donan, the Spanish-Jacobite force of some 1,000 men — including 300 Spanish marines and about 700 Highland clansmen — advanced eastward through Kintail toward the government-held lowlands. The route took them through the dramatic mountain landscape toward Glenshiel. Government scouts and small detachments attempted to monitor and harass the advancing column. The Jacobites were hoping to raise additional clans as they marched — but the numbers who joined were disappointing, reflecting exhaustion after 1715.

Forces Involved

300 Spanish marines, c.700 Highland clansmen (Seaforth Mackenzies, MacGregors, others); government scouts
