History & Significance

James III was defeated by rebel lords nominally fighting in the name of his own son (the future James IV). The king fled the battle and was killed — possibly in a mill, possibly murdered. James IV wore an iron chain around his body for the rest of his life as penance for his father's death. The location is near Bannockburn.
