In the later years of his reign Malcolm IV worked to extend and secure royal castle-building in the north as a physical expression of crown authority. The programme met resistance from lords who resented the erosion of their semi-independent status. Malcolm's campaigns in 1163 were part of this broader effort to use fortification and garrisoning as tools of royal governance in the difficult northern territories.
