In January 1313 Bruce himself led the night assault that recovered Perth from its English garrison. The town walls were tested beforehand by Wallace and the depth of the moat established; Bruce waded the icy water personally leading the escalade to encourage his men. Perth was a crucial prize — the commercial capital of Scotland north of Forth and an English administrative centre since 1296. Its recovery gave Bruce control of the Tay estuary and cut English communications with the north.
