The Battle

History & Significance

The most devastating Scottish raid of the Wars of Independence in terms of territorial reach. While Edward II was pursuing his own campaign against the Lancastrian rebels, Bruce exploited the political chaos to lead a massive chevauchee into England. The raid demonstrated that England could not defend its own territory while distracted by internal politics. It directly preceded the Battle of Byland, where Edward II himself narrowly escaped capture.
