History & Significance

Malcolm mac Heth was probably a son of the Moray mormaer Heth and had a claim to the Scottish throne through the Moray line descended from Lulach. He led a major rebellion in the north against David I, probably with the backing of the mormaers of Ross. David crushed the rising and imprisoned Malcolm -- who remained captive for over twenty years until released by Malcolm IV as part of a political settlement. The rebellion represented the continuing threat from the Moray claimant tradition.
